How to Get Fossil Pokémon in Pokémon Infinite Fusion (Every Fossil & Revival Guide)

Getting fossil Pokémon in Pokémon Infinite Fusion works differently from every other catch in the game. Instead of throwing Poké Balls, you collect ancient fossils from across Kanto and Johto, then revive them in a museum lab. There are nine fossils total, most of them are handed out as either-or choices by eccentric scientists, and the revival process takes time and can only handle one fossil at a time. The short version: collect fossils from Mt. Moon, the S.S. Anne, Celadon’s café, Saffron City, Pewter Museum, and Viridian Forest, then revive them at the Pewter City Museum lab (or the Cinnabar lab for Old Amber). This guide walks through every fossil, exactly where to find it, and how revival works.

How Fossil Revival Works in Infinite Fusion

Before hunting fossils, understand the revival rules, because they shape every decision below. On the eastern side of the Pewter City museum is a lab where you can revive fossil Pokémon. The lab opens after you defeat Gym 3, and it revives every fossil in the game except one: Old Amber, which has its own revival location.

Two limits matter. First, the lab revives only one fossil at a time. Second, each fossil takes 4 hours to revive. That means if you walk in with three fossils, you are looking at a 12-hour queue. Plan around it: drop fossils off before long play sessions or before you log off for the night, and come back to a revived Pokémon.

Timing your fossil run is part of the strategy. You can collect the Mt. Moon and S.S. Anne fossils long before Gym 3, but the Pewter lab will not touch them until the third badge is yours, so early fossils sit in your bag as dead weight. A practical approach is to grab every fossil as you pass its location, then make one revival trip to Pewter after Gym 3 and queue them back to back. You lose nothing by waiting, and you save multiple trips. Once revived, your fossil Pokémon works like any other catch. You can train it, evolve it, and fuse it with anything using DNA splicers. Fossil Pokémon make excellent fusion material because many of them have strong defensive typings or huge attack stats, and fusing them opens combinations you cannot get anywhere else. Check what your revived fossils can become with the fusion calculator before you commit.

Every Fossil in the Game and Exactly Where to Find It

Here is the complete fossil list. Work through these in roughly story order and you will collect nearly all of them in one playthrough.

Helix Fossil and Dome Fossil: Mt. Moon

Your first fossils come from Mt. Moon. After you interrupt Team Rocket’s kidnapped-scientist scene on B2F and defeat the scientist they force to battle you, Team Rocket leaves and you get to choose between the Helix Fossil (revives into Omanyte) and the Dome Fossil (revives into Kabuto). This is the classic either-or fossil choice, and whichever one you leave behind is gone from Mt. Moon.

You are not locked out of the other one forever, though. Much later, the “Diamonds and Pearls” quest at the Cinnabar Island hotel asks you to find a Diamond Necklace, which can be crafted by an NPC on Knot Island, to save a man’s marriage. The reward is $35,000 plus whichever of the Helix or Dome fossil you did not pick in Mt. Moon. So both Omanyte and Kabuto are obtainable in one playthrough if you finish the quest.

Root Fossil and Claw Fossil: S.S. Anne

On the S.S. Anne, head to the restaurant. The scientist who shared his fossil with you back in Mt. Moon is sitting there, and he will battle you. Win, and you choose between the Root Fossil (revives into Lileep) and the Claw Fossil (revives into Anorith). Do this before the ship’s story events lock you out of the restaurant area, since the S.S. Anne is a one-visit location in the story flow.

Lileep and Anorith are both strong mid-game additions. Lileep evolves into Cradily, one of the sturdiest special walls you can get at this stage, while Anorith becomes Armaldo, a physical attacker with a great offensive typing. Either choice is defensible, so pick the one that fills the bigger hole in your team.

Skull Fossil and Armor Fossil: Celadon City Café

In Celadon’s café, Super Nerd Miguel will battle you during the day. Beat him and you pick between the Skull Fossil (revives into Cranidos) and the Armor Fossil (revives into Shieldon). Miguel is the same fossil maniac you meet earlier in the story, so by now you know his deal.

This is one of the most impactful fossil choices in the game. Cranidos evolves into Rampardos, which has one of the highest attack stats of any non-legendary Pokémon, while Shieldon becomes Bastiodon, an absolute wall on both defenses. If your team needs offense, take the Skull Fossil. If you need something that refuses to die, take the Armor Fossil. Our team builder can show you which role your current lineup is missing.

Sail Fossil and Jaw Fossil: Saffron City Fossil Maniac

A fossil maniac battle was added in Saffron City in version 6.0. Win it and you choose between the Sail Fossil (revives into Amaura) and the Jaw Fossil (revives into Tyrunt). Amaura becomes Aurorus, a Rock/Ice special attacker with a unique typing, while Tyrunt becomes Tyrantrum, a Dragon/Rock physical powerhouse. Both are excellent fusion parents: Tyrantrum’s Dragon typing in particular opens up fusion combinations that are hard to build otherwise. Preview them in the fusion tool.

Old Amber: Pewter Museum Back Room and Viridian Forest

Old Amber is the odd one out. Use Cut to enter the back of the lab in the Pewter museum, where you find a scientist who needs help retrieving an Old Amber from Viridian Forest. Help her and you receive the Old Amber, which revives into Aerodactyl.

Here is the part players get wrong: Old Amber cannot be revived at the Pewter lab. It revives at the lab on Cinnabar Island instead. If you walk into Pewter with an Old Amber and the scientist turns you away, that is why. Head to Cinnabar when you get there and the lab will handle it. Aerodactyl is worth the detour: blazing speed and strong attack make it one of the best fossil Pokémon in the game, and it fuses beautifully.

Postgame Fossils: Smashing Rocks After the Elite Four

After you defeat the Pokémon League, smashed rocks can yield fossils as random drops. Documented fossil drops from Rock Smash include the Helix, Dome, Root, Claw, Armor, Jaw, and Sail fossils. This is your way to get duplicates and the fossils you passed up in either-or choices. If you picked the Skull Fossil in Celadon and now want a Shieldon too, postgame rock smashing is your grind.

Rock Smash has a second fossil-adjacent use worth knowing: the “Bad to the Bone!” quest in Saffron City asks you to find a Rare Bone using Rock Smash in Rock Tunnel, and the reward is a Diamond. It is not a fossil, but it is the same mechanic, so combine the two grinds.

Which Fossil Pokémon Are Actually Worth Using

Not all fossils are equal, and the either-or choices force real tradeoffs. Here is how to think about each pick:

  • Rampardos (Skull) is the best pure attacker of the nine. If your team lacks physical damage, this is the single highest-impact fossil choice in the game.
  • Bastiodon (Armor) is the best wall of the nine. Pick it when your team keeps getting swept and you need something that simply does not fall over.
  • Aerodactyl (Old Amber) is the best all-rounder. Great speed, strong attack, and no either-or choice blocking it. Every player should grab the Old Amber.
  • Tyrantrum (Jaw) is the best fusion parent. Dragon/Rock is a rare typing that produces unusual and powerful fusions.
  • Cradily (Root) is the best defensive pick for stall-oriented teams. Rock/Grass with recovery options is annoying to break through.
  • Armaldo, Omastar, Kabutops, Aurorus are all solid but more situational. They shine brightest as fusion material rather than standalone team members, which in a fusion game is a perfectly good reason to revive them.

Remember that in Infinite Fusion, a “weaker” fossil Pokémon can become the body or head of a top-tier fusion. Do not judge fossils only by their standalone strength. The Infinite Fusion dex lists every species you can fuse them with.

Fossil Mistakes That Cost Players Hours

  • Trying to revive Old Amber at Pewter. It only revives at the Cinnabar Island lab. This is the single most common fossil confusion in the game.
  • Forgetting the revival queue. One fossil at a time, 4 hours each. Drop fossils off early instead of discovering the queue when you want the Pokémon now.
  • Skipping the S.S. Anne restaurant. The Root/Claw choice happens on a ship you visit once in the story flow. Battle the scientist in the restaurant before you finish the ship’s events.
  • Assuming either-or choices are permanent. The Mt. Moon pair is recoverable through the Cinnabar quest, and postgame Rock Smash can produce extra fossils. Only the S.S. Anne, Celadon, and Saffron choices are truly one-per-choice per playthrough.
  • Reviving before checking fusion plans. Fossils are finite before the postgame. Decide whether you want the fossil Pokémon for your team or as fusion material first, because you cannot get most of them twice.

Where to Verify These Fossil Locations

The revival rules are documented on the wiki’s Pewter City page, the “Diamonds and Pearls” quest details live on the Quests page, and the story-order walkthrough covering Mt. Moon, the S.S. Anne, and Celadon is at pokemoninfinitefusion.net.

Fossil Pokémon: Frequently Asked Questions

How long does fossil revival take?

Four hours per fossil, and the lab handles only one fossil at a time. Queue them up before long sessions or overnight and collect the revived Pokémon later.

Where do I revive the Old Amber?

At the lab on Cinnabar Island, not the Pewter museum. The Pewter lab revives every other fossil in the game but cannot process Old Amber.

Can I get both fossils from an either-or choice?

For the Mt. Moon pair, yes: the “Diamonds and Pearls” quest on Cinnabar Island rewards the fossil you did not pick. For the S.S. Anne, Celadon, and Saffron pairs, you get one per playthrough from the choice itself, but postgame Rock Smash can drop extra fossils, including most of these.

Which fossil should I pick first?

There is no single right answer, but Aerodactyl (Old Amber) is the safest recommendation since it involves no tradeoff and is strong immediately. For the Celadon choice, pick Rampardos if you need offense and Bastiodon if you need defense.

Do I need a specific gym badge to revive fossils?

The Pewter museum lab opens after you defeat Gym 3. You will naturally have the fossils that matter by then if you follow the story order in this guide.
